Summary
A young lad sets out on a quest to collect, research, and battle "pocket monsters" called Pokémon. In a vast world filled with many strangers, evil organization members, friends, and a bitter rival, player's set out on a grand quest that is an easy recommendation for "baby's first RPG." These games established the world's highest-grossing media franchise in the world alongside the TV show, toys, and cards.
Acquisition
I don't remember how I got my first copy. It was all tossed away during the great Pokémon Purge of the early aughts. I remember buying my second (and current) copy off my childhood best friend for $5 before I moved out of state 2006~07. At this time, I wasn't allowed to own Pokémon, so this was all very hush hush.
Memories
I mean, where does a 90s kid that grew up Pokémon adjacent even begin? I have countless memories from the beginning, like missing my bus stop in kindergarten because I was too busy playing with Pokémon cards. When I realized this at the end of my street, the bus driver did not let me off and instead made me sit behind her for the entire route before taking me home. I was forced to sit behind her for the rest of the school year.
Okay, that is a not-so-happy memory. There's the time I failed the Mew Glitch. Also not so happy. I remember another childhood friend having the Red Version. We tried the whole trading starters back and forth so we could have all three.
Of course, there is the aforementioned Pokémon Purge, where my parents made me get rid of all my Pokémon games, card, toys, etc. I've shared that story before on Chapter Select.
Mostly though, I remember being lost (in a good way) in the world of Kanto. I remember pouring over the neighbor kid's copy of the Player's Guide so much that he just eventually gave it to me. Pokémon Blue felt so alive and filled with secrets. It's a game I'll always cherish.
